References on a CV: Available Upon Request or Full Details?

How to handle references without exposing private contact details too early.

References help employers confirm your work behavior, reliability, and experience. They are especially important for domestic work, driving, caregiving, and roles with trust responsibilities.

If you have permission from a previous employer or supervisor, you can provide reference details when a serious employer asks for them.

On the CV, Available upon request is often enough. It shows that references exist without exposing private phone numbers publicly.

If the job post specifically asks for references, include name, position, company, phone or email, and relationship, but only with permission.

Do not list someone as a reference if they do not know you are using their contact details. It can create a bad impression if the employer calls unexpectedly.

For fresh graduates, teachers, trainers, internship supervisors, volunteer leaders, or community leaders can sometimes be references.

For domestic workers, previous family employers can be strong references, but protect their privacy and ask first.

Keep references honest. A good reference supports your CV, but fake references can damage your application.
